After battling a number of food intolerances / allergies / infections over the last two years — 90% of which are still a mystery — I decided to stop bombing my guts and start loving ‘em a little more.

It’s strange that after spending most of my life living in Asian countries — ever heard of the term “Iron Stomach”? — it wasn’t until I moved to San Francisco that my stomach started to freak out.

As it turns out, just 6 months of eating conventional U.S. factory farm eggs was enough to wreck havoc on my stomach and morph into an egg allergy.

(If anybody tries to tell you that feeding GMO corn to livestock is harmless, feel free to cite me as an example.)

So as of this Monday and under the guidance of my awesome nutritionist, the Gut-Healing Project is finally underway.

I gave myself two days to say goodbye to gluten. Which was probably a good thing considering that, in my haste, I didn’t realize how many things I would miss and spared myself from binging on. (Ramen! Croissants! Most sausages!)

But I also didn’t realize how many things I loved that didn’t have gluten to begin with. (Dosas! Curry! Pho! BACON!)

Thankfully / unfortunately, it’s only for two months. But what my tastebuds sacrifice, my tummy gains.

Milking the SFMOMA membership, one coffee at a time.

Milking the SFMOMA membership, one coffee at a time.

From Cereal Magazine. I can’t say no to anything with gochujang.

Did you know that Australians are the second highest per capita consumers of magazines in the world? (There are several theses on this, but 1. PDF and 2. booooring.)

Magazine reading is basically an Olympic sport. Second only to binge drinking and vacationing, because srsly, name just one time you were on vacation and didn’t see a drunk Australian (maybe even with a magazine).

Grub Street has this rather comprehensive list* of food <strike>magazines</strike> journals that would make for a good looking stack (on a wooden farmhouse table, perhaps?) of palate expansion and appetite acceleration for all kinds of foodies (or anti-foodies).

My favorites: Lucky Peach, Cereal, Meatpaper if you eat meat, and Diner Journal when it’s not in the form of Greek epic poetry (i.e. “your Brooklyn is showing”).

BRB on the others. And 86 on Kinfolk*.

* Even though it’s sincere, “The Portland lover looking for something to put on their coffee table” is sadly and hilariously spot on.

I’ve tried, and tried again, but I cannot find an ounce of give a shit for Kinfolk. Don’t get me wrong, I would pin those ice cream photos in a heartbeat. But I don’t care for fluffy writing, how quaint it is to hang up your laundry, or how cute it would be to host a flower arrangement party.

It’s like an episode of Portlandia except it’s for serious.

Sorry, other hipsters. To each their own stack of magazines (on a wooden farmhouse table).

Sure, it’s 60 degrees in Northern California. Anything imported was 20%+ more than they would be Stateside.

Which was baffling and confusing, and yet slightly understandable because certain things like public healthcare actually work in Canada.

Hours of Googling brought me nothing, except complaints about the very same thing on the Internet, and some half-assed explanations.

So I have Everlane to thank for doing the hard work and summarizing this so well. (See their post below.)

But the most important reason why I’m reblogging this:

If you’re moving to Canada and still want your American made t-shirts (like those from Everlane, because, SOFTEST), it’s also nice to know that rice cookers are exempt from import duties, no matter where they’re manufactured.

Rice cookers, people. This also goes to show that one should always shop local, but even more so in Canada.

everlane:

Understanding the Canadian Duty
In preparation for our full Canadian launch we wanted to offer our new northern members a crash course on the duties they will be paying. Easier said than done.

To get to the bottom of this complex topic, we rifled through pages* of codes, exemptions, and other riveting tariff tales. Among the things we learned: There will be a 6% duty charge next time we import cheese fondue into Canada.

What’s a duty?
It’s the tariff paid on goods imported into a country. In the case of Canada, the duty is collected by the Canadian Border Services Agency.

How much is the Canadian duty?
That’s the million-dollar question with the unsatisfying answer: It depends. This number is contingent on both the type of good being imported and where it was made. For apparel, the duty stands at around 18% if manufactured in a country that has no free trade agreement with Canada.**

What’s the duty on Everlane products?
Thanks to the North American Free Trade Act (NAFTA), no duty will be imposed on any Everlane apparel manufactured and sourced in the United States.*** That means our Texas-sewn totes and our Cali-factured tees and sweatshirts are safe from the claws of the Canadian Duty Monster (CDM). Products like our Scottish-made scarves though, or Chinese-sewn silk, will be subject to tariff because those countries have no free trade agreement with Canada.

Despite the duty, our prices remain disruptively low for luxury essentials sourced from all over the globe. Here’s something else to set your mind at ease: Regardless of where they are made, rice cookers are exempt from import duties. You’re welcome.

*Found under Section XI: Textiles and Textile Articles of the 2013 Canadian Tariff file available on the Canadian Border Services Agency website

** Import taxes such as the GST, PST and/or the HST will still apply, regardless of origin of manufacture and vary by province.

***Duties do not apply to anything under $20 regardless of country of origin. Ever.
