hella corn cakes. →
oh my goodness. this place makes the best corn cakes i have ever had. ever. even while i’m being serenaded by early 90’s sade. at a close second: bitchin barbecue sauce on 4 different types of meat, no less, finished by the snuggles-soft sock-it-to-me cake. is this why oakland has a reputation of having large behinds?

if i had to live anywhere in LA, it would be los feliz so i could hang out at the dresden room. gotta love old bars with sarcastic bartenders who make ‘em stiff and remember your name.

things i've learned so far on the way to / in LA
americans love themselves some anzac biscuits. i like to remind them that they’re eating australian heritage, to which they respond: “YEAH! WE’RE EATING AUSTRALIA!” on the other hand, dehydrated chicken nuggets are not so popular. fortunately, it’s an american thing. coffee at 7 a.m. is always a good idea until you’re on the road and remember its a diuretic....

bluebottle martini. srsly. →
maybe i’m still in the honeymoon phase, but i have a feeling that this city wants to do more than just hold hands. i mean, who would’ve thought that you could combine two of my favourite beverages into ONE amazingly spectacular cosmic unicorn glitterdust awesome? i love you too, san francisco. (so what i’m trying to say is, if you’re in nopa, ask for the bluebottle...

oh yes sir, very much sir.
seriously. why would anyone go out on a perfect san francisco evening when they can have THIS for dinner? (okay, i can think of a few reasons. but still.) jeera aloo (cumin-flavored potatoes) recipe from jason, from yet another one of his many indian cookbooks 1 kg uniformly sized desiree or pontiac potatoes (about 7 medium) salt 2 and a half tablespoons cold water 1 teaspoon...

now that's just a bit much.
so apparently the germans are so into kale that they will make an event of it (Grünkohlfahrt): A whole culture around kale has developed in north-western Germany around the towns of Bremen, Oldenburg and Hannover as well as in the State of Schleswig-Holstein. There, most social clubs of any kind will have a Grünkohlfahrt (“kale tour”) sometime between October and February, visiting...

my (extra) virgin (olive oil and sea salt) kale...
our first CSA drop came in on tuesday, much to the delight of the two culinary dorks in our household. amongst the honestly quite paltry pickings (must’ve been a weak harvest this week) was a bunch of kale. wacey and i had no idea what to do with it. so wacey made a cheesy kale risotto and i made kale chips with the remaining half-bunch. the rice was awesome, but man, kale chips are...
