yes, flavour can be nerdy. and wordy. →
Best Christmas present ever.
(Seeing that it was the ONLY present, then that makes it an automatic “best” for 2010. Oh no, no we’re not bitter. We’re beyond the gift giving thing now. Let the chidlers have the fun, I don’t need anything, really. Honest.)
(Turns away. Camera closes in on single tear running down cheek.)

getting pregnant on sunday nights. →
(Pregnant with delicious delicious Indian food, that is.)
Every time I go to Nilgiri’s for the Sunday night buffet, I always tell myself that I’m not going to overdo it. So I’ve laid down a few rules:
If you have to have dosai, share it with someone.
Stay away from the naan.
Four pappadums. That’s it.
Take it easy with the pakoras.
And those little potato patty...

i left my heart in a bar in sydney. →
Red Oak was my go-to beer place when I lived in Sydney. Even after all sorts of “not smug just better” San Francisco mindblowing on the food and culinary front, a little piece of my Australian heart is always with them.
There are plenty of pubs in Sydney, but this is perhaps the only beer-drinking establishment that satisfies both the flavour and brain-bliss requirements.

happy epic transpacific flying! →
I’m back to Sydney for 2-ish weeks. It was about 16 hours of flying time and 6 hours of airport nonsense.
Since we’ve already discussed that eating on a plane is just plane bad for you (oh hoh hoh did you see what I did there? Did you? DID YOU?), I had the pleasure of deciding which lesser evil to nourish myself with on the plane.
You’d think that I would have the extreme...

oh mofongo. →
If you’ve never had mofongo before, all you need to know is:
GARLIC
PLANTAINS
MEAT SAUCE
F*CK YEAH!
And if you are looking for a place to try GARLICPLANTAINMEATSAUCEF*CKYEAH (and Cuban tortas and other things that I don’t know how to pronounce but are also a whole lotta F*CKYEAH), look no further than Frutilandia.
They’re so incredibly lovely that they almost make me want...

take heed, america. →
When it comes to building a case for vegetarianism, one of the most compelling arguments for me (second to the inhumane treatment of animals) is environmental impact of cattle ranching.
While the numbers and literature have all confirmed this, I still think there is a better way of addressing the problem without eliminating cattle ranching entirely. (And I am still an omnivore — perhaps...

the next best thing would require a flight to Hong... →
As with most Chinese fast-ish food places: cheap, cash only, always low on / out of char siu, and can be friendly if you don’t waste their time.
The beef brisket + wonton noodles are where it’s at. And if you’re hangry, then you’re in luck — because they dish ‘em out in three minutes, flat.

INTERFOODTOOBS. →
Literally, a network of food transportation, not unlike the, ahem, internet.
While it would significantly reduce the costs (and losses) of food transportation, it will take a colossal amount of work and cord-cutting to get this underground and running. Never mind trying to get this up and running in the UK on any small scale — the mere mention of taking trucks off American highways would...

dirty dim sum. →
What Good Luck Dim Sum lacks in cutlery, plates, credit card facilities, and any form of benevolent human emotion is greatly made up for by their deep fried taro stuffed with chives, pork, some crunchy bits and then wrapped with fluffeh outside cruncheh bits.
Srsly. Why pay for service? Who needs service? DEEP FRIED TARO.
